Encinitas is known for its sun and surf, but this year Summer Fun will be shining a spotlight on some phenomenal acts that delve into the dark and heavy depths of rock and roll music.

David J

David J Haskins of Northhampton England has had a long and illustrious career in music starting as founding member / bassist of seminal post-punk band Bauhaus. Their highly eclectic mix of influences included punk, glam, experimental/art rock, dub reggae, krautrock and even funk. This brooding brew of music and dark aesthetic made Bauhaus pioneers of goth rock and influential to such varied acts as Marilyn Manson, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Jane’s Addiction, the Flaming Lips and Elliot Smith.

Here is Bauhaus playing their first and most well known single “Bella Lugosi’s Dead” in the 1983 horror movie, The Hunger which starred none other than David Bowie. The lyrics were written by David J.

After Bauhaus broke up, David J went on to form Love and Rockets with his brother Kevin Haskins, playing bass and singing lead vocals. Their mix of underground rock with pop leanings paved the way for many later alternative rock groups

David J remains a creative force to be reckoned with, having released 12 LP’s and 6 EP’s worth of solo music since 1983. His excellent memoir Who Killed Mr. Moonlight? is available for purchase at Ducky Waddle’s Emporium. Dig this gorgeous tune he released three weeks ago, titled, “The Day That David Bowie Died.”

Summer Fun is honored to have this rock legend and occasional Encinitas local on the bill!
