Mr. Peaceful Easy Feelin’ to play Summer Fun!

If you don’t know who Jack Tempchin is, there’s still a good chance you’ve heard his music before. This citizen of Encinitas has penned about a half dozen well known hits that have charted internationally in his long career as a singer/songwriter.

main_photo

Perhaps Jack’s most famous and beloved tune is ‘Peaceful Easy Feeling’. It was performed by Eagles and released as a single off their eponymous debut album which reached #22 on the US Billboard charts and went platinum. You’ve probably heard it plenty of times no matter when you were born…

South Coast Winery in Temecula even has a wine in honor of Jack’s gorgeous song.

Peaceful wine

Other great songs Jack wrote for Eagles include “Already Gone”, “The Girl From Yesterday,” “Somebody,” and “It’s Your World Now.” As with most great rock bands, the Eagles eventually split up and went on to solo careers. Jack went on to co-write  “You Belong to the City”, “Smuggler’s Blues”, “The One You Love”, “I Found Somebody” and “True Love” with Glenn Frey.

‘You Belong to the City’ reached #2 on the US Billboard Charts, but its appearance on the Miami Vice soundtrack helped make that album #1 for 11 weeks and the best selling LP of 1985.

I’m sure plenty of you remember Miami Vice

And certainly some of you know the tune from when Jay Z sampled it…

But I will always remember ‘You Belong to the City’ from hundreds of repeated viewings of 1986 Mets: A Year to Remember

“Slow Dancin” is another great Jack Tempchin tune which reached the top ten for Johnny Rivers…

But we love Jack’s version with the Funky Kings best…

Jack has written songs for and with scores of other artists including Emmylou Harris, George Jones, Glen Campbell, the Paladins and Candy Kayne.

While Jack is most famous for his midas touch in songwriting, he’s also a top shelf performer who still knows how to rock.

We are honored to have Jack Tempchin with his band Rocket Science at Summer Fun on the 101 this year. Don’t miss them this Saturday 5 PM at Roadside Park!!! He just gives us a peaceful easy feeling about this weekend…

Thank You to Sponosrs

Summer Fun is a true grass roots community festival that would not be half as fun without support from some great local businesses. We pause to thank two of those sponsors today.

Thank you Swami’s Cab! Serving the coastal cities of Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas and Carlsbad, Swami’s cab is the most trusted name in town for a safe ride. Swami’s has over ten different drivers, all of whom are upstanding locals you would feel safe sending your grandmother with. Unlike Uber or any ride share apps, Swami’s has only fully licensed drivers who are commercially insured and background checked and drug screened through the San Diego Sherriff’s department. ‘No Kooks’ is their motto and they live it!

Thank you Peter Curry and Cassidy Turley Commercial Real Estate! Cassidy Turley is San Diego’s leader in commercial Real Estate. Their offices serve ” owners, investors and tenants with a full continuum of integrated services – including capital markets, tenant representation, corporate services, project leasing, property management, project and development services, and research and consulting.” And they specialize in “industrial, investment, office, life sciences, medical, retail, multi-family, restaurant/fast food, and healthcare property types as well as undeveloped land.”

Mattson 2 Version 4.0

M2 new suits

Mattson 2 is back headlining Summer Fun on the 101 for the fourth time! Twin brothers Jonathan (drums) and Jared Mattson (guitar) are seriously stoked to be playing for their hometown crowd on June 28th 4PM at Leucadia Roadside Park. Here’s some background on these Encinitas locals who are slowly conquering the globe with their refined vision of a jazz sound that all can groove to…

If you could soundtrack the jangle of the sea and the jazz of the surf, the Mattson 2 would most certainly be the composers. The foot stomps of a shoe-gazed salty air meets the tight groove and polished shake of the night with each of the duo’s multi-layered tracks. And with their third record, “Feeling Hands” (Galaxia records. Produced by Thomas Campbell), audiences around the globe are witnessing the growth of two musicians hitting full stride with deft layering, detailed composition and an altogether unmistakable sound. With their signature suits in tow, both Jared and Jonathan have relentlessly toured throughout Brazil, Paris, Spain, Japan, Denmark, Finland, The Netherlands, and the United States, generating global acclaim while also further curating their sound into a musical kaleidoscope that brings to mind everyone from Charles Mingus and Chet Baker to the Smiths and the Jesus and Mary Chain. They have acquired a pair of Bachelor’s degrees in music with an emphasis in Jazz and African studies from the University of California San Diego, and even more recently received their Masters of Fine Arts degrees in Music from University of California Irvine. At UC Irvine, they were a part of the Integrated Composition, Improvisation, and Technology program (ICIT). Having performed with the likes of Ray Barbee, Tommy Guerrero, Money Mark, John McEntire, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Cornelius, Farmer Dave Scher, Dave Pike, Jeff Parker, Mark Dresser, Nicole Mitchell, Anthony Davis, and George Lewis, the Mattson 2 have grown up quick, accomplishing more in a short time than many musicians in their entire career, and thus further providing a mature sound that is equally at home on the beach as it is in the jazz club. So tighten that tie, turn up the volume, dig your toes in the sand and soak in the shimmery whitewash of the Mattson 2.

Montalban Quintet Is Legit

MQ-cover-600px

Montalban Quintet is a musical collective founded by Christ Prescott, best known for his drumming with Pinback, No Knife and so many other great SD bands. While the line up is constantly in flux, their debut album ‘Montalban Quintet‘ includes playing by Chris Prescott (drums, guitar and electronics), Carl Prescott (trumpet), Kenseth Thibideau (bass), Jim Weiss (saxophone), Terrin Durfey (vocals), Marjorie Prescott (cello), Nathan Hubbard (vibraphone) and Hermelindo Montalban (percussion).

Not truly a quintet, the band’s name derives from band member/UCSD music grad Hermalindo Montalban, who was known to create music using five handrails on the stairwells near the Mandeville music building. Their sound is an amalgam of the group’s collective influences and  studies in jazz, minimalism, post-punk, and new western art music. Tape loops often guide the rhythmic structure and the tunes feature grand melodies that could be described as cinematic.

Dig their music to some surf clips from ‘Mancturing Stoke‘ which band founder/drummer Chris Prescott scored.

And here they are rocking the crowd at Lou’s Records on Record Store Day 2012.

These guys are a truly talented and classy group of musicians and you will not want to miss their beautiful grooves on Saturday June 28th at Roadside Park!!!

Nena Anderson: Homegrown Americana

nena_banner

Summer Fun on the 101 is so lucky to be having local songstress Nena Anderson as a headliner this year (6/28 @ Roadside Park). Having grown up in Encinitas, this daughter of a surfboard shaper is totally stoked to be playing in front of a hometown crowd in Leucadia.

nena playing

For those who don’t know much about her, Nena has been active in the San Diego music scene for about two decades. She’s been known for playing solo, forming her own groups (Brawley, Nena Anderson and the Mules), singing the June Carter parts for Johnny Cash tribute Cash’d Out and sharing the stage with other local legends such as Gilbert Castellanos, Adrien Demain and many others.

While she’s versatile enough to have been nominated for 11 SD Music Awards in 4 different categories (Best jazz, Best Acoustic, Best Americana, Best New Artist), Nena’s sound is best described as Americana. Her songs are a blending of different traditional American styles such as blues, country, folk, jazz and rock.

The beautiful tunes and lyrics that Nena writes combine smoothly with her sultry vocals and seasoned stage presence. She has a truly an original voice, so go ahead and check her songs out. We know you’ll love them no matter where your musical tastes fall.
