Shoreline Rootz: Straight Fire

shoreline rootz

The Rootz, the Rootz, the Rootz is on fire!

Shoreline Rootz is nine piece roots reggae band based out of Encinitas. They formed a few years back when presented with an opportunity to play a Bob Marley tribute at the Belly Up.  Combining Ryan Thorpe’s soulful raspy vocals with a tight crew of insanely talented instrumentalists, the Rootz exploded onto the scene with their own original music shortly after the Marley tribute.

These guys and girls play all the biggest venues around SD and have shared stages with dozens of reggae legends at some of the biggest reggae festivals in the US. But nothing gets Shoreline Rootz fired up quite like playing a show for the home town crowd. Catch the fire from Shoreline Rootz at Leucadia Roadside Park this Saturday at 4 PM.

Mrs. Magician + Summer Fun = Good Vibrations

Mrs_Magician_-_Strange_Heaven-500x504

Mrs. Magician is Jacob Turnbloom, Tommy Garcia and Cory Stier. They are three nice young gentlemen from San Diego who make epic fuzzy pop songs. These tunes will burrow in your brain with their surfy hooks until you’re singing their sinister choruses in your sleep. Embrace it…

Their debut album ‘Strange Heaven’ was produced by San Diego rock legend, Jon ‘Swami’ Reis (Rocket From the Crypt, Hot Snakes, Drive like Jehu, The Night Marchers) and it spins around on top of our record player for weeks at a time.

We are so unbelievably stoked to have these guys playing one of their only two San Diego shows this summer in Leucadia at Summer Fun on the 101: Saturday 6/29 at 6 PM  (catch them also @ Soda Bar July 30th). They are loud, tight and full of energy on stage.

Mrs. Magician had a new song debut recently on RollingStone.com (click for FREE Mp3) and they will be recording a new album this fall.  These guys are blowin’ up. Believe us, you will be summer bummed if you miss Mrs. Magician playing at Roadside Park.

Peter Sprague: just your friendly neighborhood guitar legend

homePhoto3Barb

Peter Sprague is a true Leucadian. Maybe you’ve seen him out body surfing or gettin’ his beach yoga on around town. But if you’ve never heard him play, you might not suspect that he’s one of the finest and  most celebrated jazz guitarists in the world.

Don’t believe us? Pick up Scott Yanow’s recent book on 342 Great jazz guitarists of all time. Peter’s in there!

ScottYanowBookCover

Don’t believe Scott Yanow? Then listen to Peter shred yourself…

We hope you’re convinced of how awesome Peter Sprague is. But if you’re still skeptical, get out to Leucadia Roadside Park this Saturday at 3 PM and see this great guitarist play with four of his amazingly talented friends.

Big Party Weekend in Leucadia

Two of our most generous sponsors this year, Surfy Surfy and O’Hurley’s Beach Bar/the Leucadian are both having big ragers tonight.

surfy party

Surfy surfy, party party, yeaaaaah bay bay!!! And it’s for a good cause too.

This year at Summer Fun, look out for some awesome raffle prizes (like hand shaped surfboards!) and some bitchin” new t-shirts from our longtime supporters at Surfy Surfy Surfshop.

They are also having a Billabong sample sale out in front of the Sample Sale Madonna right at this very moment.

Now in case you didn’t know, the two bars in Leucadia (O’Hurley’s and Bar Leucadian) have come under new ownership recently. They’ve been a big help with Summer Fun on the 101, and tonight is the grand re-opening of Bar Leucadian–now returning to it’s old name: The Leucadian. If you’ve not been to either bar in while, head over to check out the new improved ambiance, additional craft beer taps and overall friendlier atmosphere.

Trouble in the Wind

Trouble in the Wind is one of this year’s headliners. They’ve played Summer Fun the last 2 years and we are so pumped to have them again in 2013. Their sound has elements of folk, country and rock. Robbie Gira’s voice is a beautiful, raw and emotive moan unlike any other. Multi-instrumentalist Kyle Merritt keeps things interesting with his mastery of the guitar, accordion, banjo, melodic and slide guitar. Trevor Mulvey and Larry Doran hold it all together on bass and drums respectively. These boys seem to elevate their energetic live performances with every new show. Give this track a listen:

Catch Robbie, Kyle, Larry and Trevor at Summer Fun on 6/29 @ Roadside Park  5:45 PM.

You can also see them tonight (Friday 6/21) in Carlsbad 3 different times!!!

6:00-6:20pm @ Magee Park Gazebo
7:30-7:50 @ Boar Cross’n
8:30-8:50 @ Box’d

We have links to all of this year’s artists posted on the ‘Schedule’ tab now and info on volunteering for Summer Fun on the new ‘Volunteer’ tab. Dig it.

Leucadia Beach Inn

leucadia beach inn

Summer time means tourist season. If you have family or friends coming to visit you in Encinitas, consider sending them to stay at one of Summer Fun’s big sponsors this year, Leucadia Beach Inn. Located  just a short walk to Beacons and Grandview beaches (1322 N Coast hwy 101), the Leucadia Beach Inn is one of the nicest hotels in town. Their rooms are very reasonably priced and come with FREE wifi. So why not? It’s Father’s Day weekend and as much as you love the guy, you don’t want Dad snoring on your couch. Go see Todd about a room in the Leucdia Beach Inn and tell him Summer Fun sent ‘ya for the bro deal!

Inspired & the Sleep: Garage 2 Glory

Hey Summer Fun fans! Today we would like to introduce you to a band called Inspired and the Sleep that will be playing at Ducky Waddle’s June 28th at  8:15 PM.

Max and Bryce are two young ocean lifeguards who love to make sweet psychedelic music.

max and bryce

They like to loop flutes and strange percussive noises to build epic grooves. Here’s a jam of theirs we never get tired of hearing. The video is also pretty sweet. Those of you who went to high school in the 90’s should definitely enjoy…

Inspired and the Sleep is competing in a web based voting contest right now called Garage 2 Glory. Click that link and go vote for Inspired and the Sleep to win a big gig opening for White Arrows and Heavy Hawaii.

We’ll be doing more posts about all of the artists involved in Summer Fun on the 101 in the coming days so stay tuned to summerfunonthe101.com
